Disease Entity: Diarrhea from unspecified causes
Increasing numbers of diarrhea cases are being reported from earthquake survivor populations in Talcahuano located north of Concepción. Limited access to clean drinking water is said to be the primary cause. In and around Concepción, Chilean and international field hospitals are in operation, primarily servicing wounded persons. Additional volunteer medical teams are awaiting instructions from the Chilean government to determine where they will be deployed. Lastly, the disaster relief representative for the government announced that to date, there have been no known infectious disease outbreaks in Santiago triggered by sanitary conditions. Vaccination campaigns against hepatitis and tetanus are underway, and vaccinations against influenza are scheduled to begin on March 15th.
