We often see academics from many scientific discipline weighing in on health security issues. Much of this opinion represents healthy discourse as the global community struggles with a challenging issue. However, the transmission of memes may sometimes backfire and reveal assertions that are misleading or wrong. Assertions that begin to circulate around the Internet. During these times, the sometimes dramatic gulf between academia and operational reality becomes apparent.
This ongoing debate is one example. What is most impressive is the gap in understanding of the realities of biological event detection, recognition, and warning and the coupling of that information to response and understanding how vaccines are currently produced.
