Kudos to Dr. Memish, Deputy Minister for Public Health of the KSA, for timely reporting of the 3rd novel coronavirus. The messaging was concise and provided all of the necessary details to properly assess the situation from an international health perspective.
We previously highlighted several problems with the human processes behind the warning sequence for the first case of novel coronavirus- problems that significantly inhibited realization of the 2005 IHRs' intent. These delays in warning are often associated with previously unrecognized infectious agents, and unfortunately, also associated with IDIS Category 3-->5 level events on occasion.
Dr. Memish and the Ministry of Health faced an incredibly difficult decision, with billions on the line, in communicating about a pathogen that would be quickly associated in the public eye with SARS. Here the Ministry has demonstrated a rapid course correction that is to be congratulated.
