Report Type: Surveillance Report
Location: Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Disease Entity: Pneumonia
A registered nurse who returned to California this week after volunteering in Haiti for a two-week period reports that the primary cause of illness and death among earthquake-affected children she evaluated was pneumonia.
In previously issued SitReps and Field Reports we have
documented pneumonia among ground responders and the Haitian pediatric
population, with recorded mortality primarily among infants. Due to the continued limited diagnostic
capability in Haiti, etiology of the observed respiratory disease remains
unknown.
Formal medical surveillance conducted by MSPP (the Haiti Ministry of Health, supported by PAHO and CDC) have long highlighted acute respiratory illness to be a leading cause of morbidity.
